Newborn ICU
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an area of the medical centres that specialise solely in the treatment of Newborns or Infants who require Respiratory Support and Less Constant Nursing.
What is Phototherapy?
Phototherapy, a type of treatment, is designed for those newborns who are going through the health issues of Jaundice. During this treatment, the Paediatricians put the babies on a special light-therapy blanket and the lights are attached to their beds or incubators. In many cases, we see most babies only need this therapy for a few days.
Causes of Having Neonatal Jaundice
Neonatal Jaundice, one of the most common newborn health conditions, is the appearance of yellow skin and eyes in infants. It is caused by an accretion of Bilirubin in a baby's body. When Red Blood Cells (RBC) break down naturally, the yellow substance is formed, and then its liver normally filters Bilirubin from blood. Severe Jaundice can occur in your baby's body if it has:
- A Blood Infection.
- Too Many Red Blood Cells.
- A Low Oxygen Level.
- A Different Type of Blood than you.
- A serious Liver Condition such as Biliary Atresia etc.
What is an Exchange Transfusion?
An Exchange Transfusion refers to a Blood Transfusion in which an infant's blood is exchanged with other blood or blood components. This treatment is primarily performed to remove antibodies and excess Bilirubin of the patient in Isoimmune Disease, and replaced by the donated blood. It can be performed manually or by using a machine.
Causes of Performing Exchange Transfusion
The patient's blood is slowly removed (most often about 5 to 20 mL at a time, depending on the neonate's size and its severity of illness) from the body. An Exchange Transfusion is needed to treat the conditions:
- Dangerously High Red Blood Cell count in an Infant.
- Severe Disturbances in Body Chemistry.
- Rh-induced Hemolytic Disease of the Neonates.
- Severe Neonatal Jaundice which does not respond to Phototherapy with Bili Lights etc.
